Physics Department Guidelines for Writing Annual Reports

The Annual Reports are mandated by the Graduate School for all graduate students past their first year at Duke.   They are due 31 March each year, and are required before you may receive your registration PIN.   The report consists of the following:

1. The courses you have taken in the past year (if applicable).
   
2. The courses you plan to take next year (if applicable).
   
3. The courses you still need to take to complete your course requirements.
4. The research you have done in the past year (if applicable).
   
5. The research you plan to do in the coming year.
   
6. When you plan to take your prelim if you have not already taken it.
7. If past your prelim, your estimated date of PhD completion.
8. Any talks or posters you have given in the past year.
9. Any papers you have published in the past year.
10. Any fellowships, grants, or awards you have received in the past year.
11. Your advisor's signature or an e-mail from your advisor indicating he/she approves the report.

Please send this document to your DGS and to your committee members (if you have a committee).  Please use the opportunity preparing the Annual Report provides to assess your progress in the program and discuss with your advisor your future plans and timeline for Ph.D. completion.  If you have taken your prelim in the past year, you may substitute the prelim report (submitted by your advisor and approved by your committee after the prelim exam) in lieu of the Annual Report.  If you will graduate in time for a May degree, you need not submit an Annual Report.
