how to get around proxy servers and firewall when running DS9 or VNC

questions to ask of the computer admins

1)  are you running a proxy server?

       a) if no, do nothing special; go to question 3

       b) if yes, ask question 2

2) is the proxy required?

       a) if no, do nothing special; go to question 3

       b) if yes,   set proxy server in ds9:  under Edit menu, select Preferences>, HTTP
then type proxy host and proxy port in the pop-up box
also, save Preferences:   under Edit menu, select Preferences>,  Save Preferences

                          go to question 3

3) are you using a firewall?

       a) if no, only the proxy setting is needed (and only if answer was "yes" to question 1); ds9 should work properly

       b) if yes, ask question 4

4) is firewall set to DENY ALL?

       a) if yes,   firewall must be adjusted (both trust-to-untrust and untrust-to-trust) :

            (1) the following IP addresses for ds9 servers must be allowed access for DS9 to function

                128.6.239.124    for basho.rutgers.edu  access

                131.142.40.41
                131.142.41.9
                131.142.41.10   for chandra-ed.cfa.harvard.edu access

            (2) port 28574 must be open for DS9  server access

            (3) the following IP address must be activated for VNC to function:

                128.6.239.124    for basho.rutgers.edu  access

            (4) port 5900 must be open for VNC access

DS9 and VNC should now work properly in all of the above changes are made

       b) if no, DS9 and VNC should work properly

error messages and what they might mean

clicking on one of the servers in the Virtual Observatory pop-up window

      problem:
Accessing one of the servers in Virtual Observatory requires Windows to temporarily write to the directory
