Tired of the silly clouds when you boot up Win9x?

So was I! So I read up on how to change the startup/shutdown logos. For my enjoyment, I came up with a F-Bod theme.

Startup: RickL. heatin' em up at MIR.
Shutting down: 2000 SS Camaro. (from the sales brochure)
OK to Turn off: 1998 WS6 doing a power slide. (from the sales brochure)

Instructions for use:

  1. You may download the zipfile from my account here: http://www.phy.duke.edu/~hartley/iroc/win9xlogo.zip . The zipfile is 160,989 bytes (157kb) in size, so you can check that you are getting the real deal.

  2. I suggest putting the original logo*.sys files in the /windows/sysbckup/ directory in case you need to return to the original files.

  3. Extract the files to the root directory of your HD, preserving paths; i.e, put logo.sys in C:\, and put logow.sys and logos.sys in c:\windows\.

  4. If you do not *see* any *.sys files on your harddrive, open up the Explorer, go down View to Options, and click the second Tab (View). Enable "Show All Files", and hit OK.

  5. Enjoy.

Logo*.sys are just standard windows bitmaps that have been renamed logo(something).sys. The Loader decodes the 320x400 images and displays them onscreen at the correct perspective ratio.

Of course, I do not take credit for the photos themselves, or even the idea. I read up on it at http://www.annoyances.org/win95. If you like these startup/shutdown screens, all I ask is that you let me know:

hartley_@_phy.duke.edu (Change _@_ to @)

And please note: I take NO RESPONSIBILITY if you screw up your computer. I read up on how to do it, and I've been running with these logos on my computer at school for over a week now without any incidents, despite running a 6 year-old overclocked Pentium (read: timebomb). But if you delete, misplace, modify, or otherwise mangle the innerds of your computer, I will not fix your computer, NOR WILL I BE HELD LIABLE for any losses incurred by such corruptions. Use at your own risk.

(Sorry, I have to say that in our litigious society.)

Cheers. Happy Driving!
