Coming soon .... Gardens in the Chicago Area
including scenes and flowers from the Chicago Botanical Garden.
-
Added September 25, 1997: This photo tour
of some of the more impressive Gardens
in the Seattle Area (about 400 KB plus photo enlargements which are
typically around 60 KB each) shows scenes and flowers from the Bellevue
Botanical Garden, Medina Wells Nursery in Bellevue, WA; and on Bainbridge
Island, the Little and Lewis Water Garden, Linda Cochran's private garden,
Heronswood Nursery, and the Blodel Reserve. The photos were taken in mid
July, 1997. All images were digitized from 35 mm slides and negatives.
-
Added June 1, 1997: This photo tour of the
Gardens
of Christchurch, New Zealand (about 500 KB plus photo enlargements
which are typically around 50 KB each) shows parts of three large perennial
gardens in Christchurch just after Christmas, 1996. About half the photos
were taken in the Botanic Gardens, but there are also scenes and flowers
from Mona Vale and Gethsemane gardens. All of the images were digitized
from 35 mm slides and negatives.
-
Added April 15, 1997: The Lady
Norwood Rose Garden in Wellington, New Zealand (about 180 KB plus photo
enlargements which are typically around 50 KB each) is part of a large
botanical garden that adorns one of the steep hills that surround the bay.
The photos shown here were taken on a clear and windy Sunday afternoon
in early January, 1997. This is a very large rose garden, and we were there
at the peak of the bloom. The close-up rose pictures are currently duplicated
on the Visual
Garden pages, but there are also some nice overviews of the garden
and the city. All of the images were digitized from 35 mm slides and negatives.
-
Added Oct. 16, 1996: Photo tour of six of
the public
gardens in and around Vancouver, BC. (about 400 KB plus photo enlargements
which are typically around 50 KB each) The weather in this city may be
cloudy and misty for much of the year, but the gardens prosper. Most of
the photos here are from the 55 acre VanDusen Botanical Gardens, but there
are also pictures from Stanley Park, Queen Elizabeth Park, the Dr. Sun
Yat Sen Classical Chinese Garden, the Park and Tilford Gardens in North
Vancouver, and Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island. All images are from
35 mm film.

Video/photo tour of the Botanical
Garden in Christchurch, New Zealand on December 1, 1993 (about 400
KB). This garden features a crystal clear river, and extensive rock garden,
and the biggest and healthest herbaceious perennial border I've ever seen.
A little too early in the season for the best bloom, but still some inviting
pictures. Most of the images are digitized from hi-8 video frames with
a few from 35 mm negatives.
-
Video/photo tour of the Botanical
Garden in Dunedin, New Zealand on December 4, 1993 (about 500 KB).
Most of this garden is on a hill overlooking the bay, but it also extends
to a flat area at the base of the hill. Dividing the two parts is another
clear river bordering a long steeply inclined rock garden. There's an aviary
at the top of the hill. Although further south and only two days later,
more flowers were in bloom here than in Christchurch. Most of the images
are digitized from hi-8 video frames, with a couple from 35 mm negatives.
Travel

Added Nov. 14, 1998: My daughter's description
of her sea
kayaking trip off Vancouver Island in August 1998 with pictures of
scenery and orca whales.
-
Photo tour of our August hike along the Maroon-Crater
Scenic Loop in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness near Aspen, Colorado.
Maroon lake is at 9580 feet and Crater Lake is at 10,076 feet. The entire
trail is about 3.2 miles round trip up a rocky but lushly green mountain
valley and fields of wildflowers. Included are some very nice pictures
of both lakes with sky and mountains reflected in their mirror smooth surfaces.

New
Zealand Fishing 1997, (about 600 KB) This rather lengthy article describes
the fishing portion of our trip to two outstanding fishing lodges over
the Christmas holidays. It features about twenty expandable thumbnail images
showing scenes from some of the rivers that we fished from the Western
Rivers Lodge and the Motueka
River Lodge on the northern part of south island. If you're thinking
of going to NZ or just dreaming about big trout, I think you might like
some of these pictures.

New
Zealand Fishing 1993, (about 60 KB) This article describes the fishing
portion of our trip to the Motueka
River Lodge and Cedar Lodge on the south island of New Zealand. The
time of the trip was from the end of November to early December in 1993;
a few weeks earlier than the 1997 trip and considerably colder. This article
is a slight modification of one that I uploaded to Compuserve shortly after
this trip was completed. I've added a few pictures that I happen to have
digitized: I'll add a couple more as time permits. It's more general than
the 1997 article above.

Float
Trip on the Blackwater River, BC, 1992, (about 12 KB) Not all trips
are good experiences, and this is one we would not care to repeat. This
text only note was written shortly after we returned from the trip and
after we had sent a letter of complaint to the owner and made an angry
phone call to Kaufmann Streamborn who sold us the package. The problem
was not with the fishing, which was fair to good, but with the lack of
organization and planning on the part of the owner. It soured me on Kaufmann
packages and on British Columbia guiding standards.

Float
Trip on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho, 1990 (about 15
KB) This is a text only note I wrote some time ago describing a wonderful
fishing/float trip we took with Aggipah River Trips down the "River of
No Return". Marilyn wasn't there, but we had a grand time for six days
on this remote wilderness river.
