thumbnail of pictureWilkins River, New Zealand (1024x768:152k) (500x375:48k) ... Fantastic scenery, 3-5 lb trout on #14 and smaller dry flies and 12 foot #5 leader material! For you non fly fishers, that's a 20+ inch fish on a barbless hook about 1/4" long and a hair thin, easily broken leader. This is not B.A.S.S. fishing. It's a long hike between fish and they spook easily so you only get a couple of casts over each. This picture was taken in early December in a spot reachable only by helicopter or an overnight hike.

Thumbnail of pictureMotueka River, New Zealand (1024x768: 312k) (600x450: 104k) ... Beautiful river and cooperative trout. This 4 pound brown trout wasn't the biggest fish I caught on a recent trip, but it was one of the most memorable because of the location and the challenge of catching the fish that was feeding on the surface in the shallow water over the narrow ledge that runs back under the overhanging willows on the right. I hope he's back there gorging himself right now. The water right behind me just off the ledge is about six feet deep.
