Hello Everyone,


    At the last general meeting of the Graduate Student Organization of
this department, it became clear that some people were not aware of the
position of Ombudsman within the organization.  The role of Ombuds"person"  
is to offer a person who has a complaint or problem within the department
an additional avenue for resolving his/her problem.  The intended role of
the Ombudsperson in handling complaints within the department is described
in the GSO constitution:

"If an individual, or small group of members, has a 
complaint about the Department or University, the Ombudsman shall act as 
the liaison between the complainants and the relevant Department or 
University representatives. The identity of the complainants shall be 
treated in a confidential manner unless the Ombudsman is granted specific 
permission by the complainants to act otherwise."

    This year I am serving as the GSO Ombudsperson.  Please don't hesitate 
to contact me if you have any problems or concerns that you would like to 
talk about or try to resolve with the help of an ombudsperson.  I can be 
found in Rm 156 in the physics building, telephone 660-2515.
