Graduate Students - First Year Teaching

For several years the undergraduate physics majors have complained that
there is no space in the Physics Building where they can get together informally
to help each other with tough homework assignments, chat about physics,
or just get to know each other. The impediments to setting up a study
area have been finding space in an overcrowded building and money to undertake
the renovations. Last spring, TUNL offered to swap some space
to free up Room 09 for a study area, but we were unable to secure funds
from Duke to fix up the space. Enter Dr. Kedar (Bud) Pyatt (B.S.
’55) with a donation to the department of $25,000. Dr. Pyatt’s company
(S3 Division of Maxwell Labs, La Jolla, CA) has been quite successful,
giving him an opportunity to support his Alma Mater. The renovations
are complete and the final touches are being applied to the room; a dedication
ceremony will be held later in the spring semester. Stop by Room
09 late at night and I’m sure you’ll see our majors preparing for that
exam or sharing conversation over popcorn!
