![]() ![]() The Duke Free Electron Laser Laboratory is just completing a 12,000 square foot addition to the laboratory. The first floor of the new structure is an open area for research in materials, condensed matter physics and nuclear physics. The nuclear physics research will be conducted by TUNL physicists and will involve polarized gamma rays produced in the OK4 FEL through Compton scattering. A special vault has been constructed on the first floor to house these experiments. On the second floor there are two research labs for biological and chemical research. There is alsoa surgery suite with two operating rooms, animal prep and recovery, surgeon scrub, and supply storage. A common area is sharred by the labs for sample preparation. Also on the second floor are 17 cubicals for visiting scientists and their students. The building was funded by the Keck Foundation and Duke University.
The Office of Naval Research provided funds to equip the laboratory.
