Shangying Wang
Shangying Wang. was born in Wuhu, a small city in the southeastern Anhui province of China. I received my B.S. degree from the department of Optical Science and Engineering at Fudan University in 2006. My sophomore year I became interested in biophysics because I liked math, physics and biology and thought it would be great if I could use math and physics as a tool to solve biology problems. That is when I joined Prof. Peinan Wang's group at Fudan.
In order to learn more solid knowledge, I chose Duke Physics to pursue my Ph.D study. Once I came here, I found it was very challenging to shift my major from Engineering to Physics. I will admit that I suffered during the first two years when I was taking courses. By the end of my second year I felt more comfortable and confident and joined Prof. Glenn Edwards' lab (FELL). Prof. Edwards is a super nice advisor and gave me a lot of advice about life and research. However, I found myself not as enthusiastic in that area as I thought I should. After giving this a lot of thought, I decided I would try something new to find out what I really would be interested in. I am now working with Prof. Sridhar Raghavachari, a professor in neurobiology department and under the supervision of Prof. Henry Greenside in the physics department. The project I am doing research on is a very interesting topic about the transcription and translation of gene expression to find out how external or internal signals affect the gene expression. In my spare time, I like to travel or just be with my friends.
