Dear Department Chair:

We wish to acquaint you with several Science Fellowship programs run by the
American Institute of Physics, which are available to faculty and
postdoctoral members of your department who have an interest in national or
foreign policy.

With these programs, we seek to provide a public service by enabling PhD
scientists to spend a year working either in a congressional office (the
AIP Congressional Science Fellowship) or in the U.S. Department of State
(the AIP State Department Science Fellowship) to contribute scientific and
technical expertise to the nations policymakers. In return, not only do
Fellows gain knowledge and experience from participating in the shaping of
domestic or foreign policy, but they help to expand the dialogue and
improve relations between the policy and scientific communities.

Fellowship applicants must be U.S. citizens, members of one or more of the
ten AIP Member Societies, and possess a PhD (or outstanding equivalent
research experience). Qualified scientists of any age and career level are
encouraged to apply, and we particularly urge faculty members to consider
serving as a Fellow during a sabbatical, as a unique way of serving the
science community and the government.

We hope that you will circulate the Fellowship announcement included below,
and that you will encourage colleagues to consider applying for these
opportunities.

Sincerely,

H. Frederick Dylla

GOVERNMENT FELLOWSHIPS FOR SCIENTISTS:

Experience a unique year in Washington, DC as a Science Fellow!

The American Institute of Physics offers two competitive Science Fellowship
programs that are open to qualified members of AIP Member Societies. AIP
State Department Fellows serve a year at the DC headquarters of the U.S.
Department of State; AIP Congressional Fellows spend a year working in a
congressional office or on a committee staff. Both programs enable U.S.
scientists to learn about the federal government while contributing S & T
expertise to the policymaking process. AIP Fellowship qualifications
include U.S. citizenship, AIP Member Society membership, PhD or equivalent
in physics-related field, and a desire to use your scientific knowledge to
serve and inform U.S. domestic or foreign policy. Application deadlines
are November 1, 2007 for the 2008-2009 AIP State Dept. Fellowship and
January 15, 2008 for the 2008-2009 AIP Congressional Fellowship. Please
see
www.aip.org/gov/fellowships.html
for further information. The web site
also provides links to Congressional Fellowship programs run by several AIP
Member Societies (APS, AGU and OSA).

Reminder: Deadline Approaching for AIP State Dept. Fellowship

This is a reminder to members of all AIP Member Societies -
application materials for the 2008-2009 AIP State Department
Science Fellowship are due by NOVEMBER 1, 2007. For scientists
interested in the nexus between foreign policy and science, there is
still time to apply to this program. For this year, AIP has
implemented a new paperless application process. Please visit our
Fellowships web site at
http://www.aip.org/gov/fellowships/ to apply.

As an AIP State Department Fellow, you will experience a unique year
in Washington, making a personal contribution to U.S. foreign policy
while learning how the policy-making process operates. The AIP
State Department Science Fellowship places one or more qualified
scientists in the State Department for a 12-month term to apply
their knowledge and analytical skills to S&T issues that are
international in scope. An annual contribution to the AIP
Fellowship is provided by the American Astronomical Society.

AIP is currently seeking applicants for the 2008-2009 State
Department Science Fellowship. The term will start in the fall of
2008. Qualified scientists at any stage of their career are
encouraged to apply. Information on applying is provided below.
Interested readers can also see our web site
http://www.aip.org/gov/fellowships/ and click on "AIP State
Department Fellowship" for more information on the program.

TO APPLY FOR THE 2007-2008 AIP STATE DEPARTMENT FELLOWSHIP:

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, have a PhD in physics or a closely
related field, be members of one or more of AIP's ten Member
Societies, and be eligible to receive an appropriate security
clearance prior to starting the Fellowship. (The PhD requirement
may be waived for outstanding applicants with equivalent research
experience.) Once selected, the Fellow will work with the State
Department to arrange an assignment.

You must visit our Fellowships web site
http://www.aip.org/gov/fellowships/ to apply. Applicants will be
asked to fill out a form on the web site, providing contact and
qualification information. They will also receive instructions on
submission by email of the following materials:

information on your reason for applying, scientific and professional
background, foreign policy interest or experience, and attributes
that would make you effective in this Fellowship.
