Carolyn Berger grew up outside of Los Angeles, California, but gave up the sunshine and warmth to attend the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. In addition to studying astrophysics at Holy cross, she was also a premed student and considered going into medicine. "Duke is a wonderful place to merge physics and medicine," she notes, "and I currently work with Dan Gauthier in his cardiac dynamics lab. One of the best parts of our group is that I get to share my way of thinking about the cardiac dynamics with a diverse group of scientists who all contribute different perspectives." After Duke she expects to continue her research in heart disease and possibly attend medical school.
Carolyn is an avid runner, having competed in college and recently finished the Chicago Marathon. She particularly enjoys the Duke Forest, next to campus, and Umstead Park, on the way to Raleigh. She also studies dance at a studio adjacent to campus.
