PHY 49: From Quanta to Quarks: The Revolution in Twentieth-Century Physics

Course Description

We will cover the development of the elementary particle physics in the 20th century, its impact on cosmology, its relevance to the life sciences and molecular medicine, and its relevance to the technology of digital computers. Topics to be discussed include wave-particle duality of the quantum world, the hidden forces at play within atomic nuclei, and the mysteries and riddles of quarks and gluons hidden deep inside protons and neutrons. Other topics to be touched on include lasers, semiconductors, DNA, and optoelectronics.
