Physics 143 Fall 2007
Old Announcements
Here for the record...
- 08/27/07: Welcome to Physics 143!
- 08/27/07: New and prospective physics majors should be aware that
the American Physical Society
offers free trial membership to students.
- 08/31/07: My usual office hours are Sundays, 3-5 pm, but this
Sunday (Sept 2) they will be 1-3 pm.
- 09/19/07: The first quiz is next Wednesday. Here's some info
about it:
- A practice quiz is posted.
This will give you some
idea of what kind of questions to expect. Solutions will be posted next week.
- I will do a review on Monday covering WUN2K.
- You will be allowed a "cheat sheet": one piece of paper with
anything you want hand-written on one side of it. It's a good
review exercise to write this! You must hand this cheat
sheet in with your quiz. You won't be given any constants
on the quiz, so you should write what you think you might need on
your sheet.
- Calculators are allowed, but you may not use special functions
like graphing, programming, etc., i.e. they may only be used
for simple computation (which is all you should need them for).
- 09/20/07: I will be away (in Japan) from Wed Sept 26 morning until Sun
Sept 30 evening. As a result:
- On Wed Sept 26, your quiz will be proctored by Kristine Callan.
- On Fri Sept 28, you will have a guest lecturer, Prof. Oh.
- My office hours on Sun, Sept 30 are canceled; however I will
have some extra office hours the day before your quiz, Tue 10-11:30 am.
- The homework originally due on Oct 1 is also canceled, since
not enough new material will be covered to justify a new assignment.
I should be email contact most of the time I am away, when I am not
on a plane.
- 09/25/07: IMPORTANT: tomorrow's quiz will be in
the lab rooms downstairs, due to audio interference from
the classroom next door. Please try to come a bit early.
- 10/17/07: I will be away next week, from Oct 20 morning to Oct 27
evening.
- During class time
of this week I have arranged tours of research labs in
the department, which I hope you will enjoy: please see
the syllabus for information on where
you should show up on each day.
- Please note that your homework 7 will be based on these tours. If you
cannot attend, please contact me.
- Because I'll be away this Sunday and won't have office hours,
you have an extension on homework 6 until Oct 29. Homework
7 is due the same day. Please don't wait until then to start
homework 6, though; it's a relatively long one.
- I will have regular office hours on October 28.
- I will be
intermittently in email contact during the time I'm away.
- 11/01/07: my office hours this Sunday, Nov 4, will be 1-3 pm.
- 11/01/07: I will also have extra office hours on Monday, Nov 5,
from 3-5 pm.
- 11/01/07: The second quiz is next Wednesday. It will be similar in style
to the first.
- A practice quiz is posted.
- There shouldn't be any audio interference this time, so
please come to the regular classroom.
- 11/01/07: I will be away (in Japan) from Tue Nov 6 morning until Sun
Nov 11 evening. As a result:
- On Wed Nov 7, your quiz will be proctored by Kristine Callan.
- On Fri Nov 9, your lecture will be given by Prof. Chandrasekharan.
- My office hours on Sun, Nov 11 are canceled; however I will
have some extra office hours on Monday (please see above).
- Homework will be due as normal, although the assignment due Nov 12
will be a relatively short one.
I should be email contact most of the time I am away, when I am not
on a plane.
- 11/13/07: I have to be away one more time, on Sunday, November 18,
and Monday November 19. As a result:
- I will have office hours Friday, November 16, 2-4 pm instead of
Sunday.
- So as not to get behind in material, I am
scheduling special replacement lectures during your lab periods in the week
following the Thanksgiving break. These will be during the first
50 minutes of your lab (it will be the same lecture on Wed and
Thu, repeated for each section). We will meet in the lab.
- On November 19 you will have a special lecture on cosmology
and the cosmic microwave background by visitor Dr. Laura Cayon.
This is a currently exciting topic of research.
- Since I won't be in town on Monday, nor will be around
for pre-homework-due-date help on Sunday, you can hand your homework
in (to Yang's mailbox in the physics office) any time up
to 4 pm on Tuesday, November 20. I will be around on Tuesday morning
for last minute questions.
