Physics 143 Fall 2007
Homework
In general, problem sets will be first posted here on Mondays, and
due the following Monday in class. Solutions will be posted in the
afternoon or evening of the day the problem set is due. No late
problem sets will be accepted, short of a Dean's excuse. However one
(and only one) problem set grade will be dropped from your total.
Homework is worth 15% of your grade.
Homeworks are graded by
your TA, Yang Yang.
If you have a question about the grading or solutions, please contact him.
It is okay to use Matlab, Mathematica, and similar software for
doing computations. However, make sure it is clear that's what you
are doing, for instance by providing printouts in your solution. It
is up to you to convince the grader that you have done the problem
yourself, using tools appropriately, and that you didn't just write
down an answer.
Don't forget units and significant figures, and please write clearly.
The grader is justified in taking off points if he cannot read what
you have written.
- Homework 1: (PDF) due Monday, September 3, at the beginning of class.
- See the second-to-last question of FAQ 1 for a hint for problem 2c.
- Information needed for problem 3: wavelength in material
is lambda/n, where here n=1.33 is the index of refraction of water.
- 08/31/07: on last question "quantitatively" is changed to
"qualitatively", since we didn't quite cover the material in class
today needed for a more quantitative analysis.

- Homework 2: (PDF) due Monday, September 10, at the beginning of class.
- Homework 3: (PDF) due Monday, September 17, at the beginning of class.
- Homework 4: (PDF) due Monday, September 24, at the beginning of class.
- Note that the answer in the back of the book is incorrect for 4-23
if you assume visual wavelengths.

- The homework originally due on October 1 is canceled.
- Homework 5: (PDF) due Monday, October 15, at the beginning of class.
- Homework 6: (PDF) due Monday, October 29, at the beginning of class.
- Homework 7: (PDF) due Monday, October 29, at the beginning of class.
- Homework 8: (PDF) due Monday, November 5, at the beginning of class.
- For 8.13, the answer in the back of the book for part b is incorrect.
- For 9.1, use the Coulomb potential for V(r).
- Homework 8 solutions by Y. Yang
- Homework 9: (PDF) due Monday, November 12, at the beginning of class.
- Homework 10: (PDF) due Tuesday, November 20, by
4 pm in Yang's mailbox.
- Note: back-of-the-book answer for the last part of 9-23 seems
to be incorrect.
- Homework 10 solutions by Y. Yang
- Note: for problem 9-21, the positive m values should have positive
energies.
- Homework 11: (PDF) due Friday, November 30, at the beginning of class.
- Homework 12: (PDF) due Friday, December 7, at the beginning of class.
