Audience and Prerequisites

Intended for students not majoring in science or engineering.
No previous knowledge of physics assumed.

Textbooks and Other Readings

How Things Work: The Physics of Everyday Life, Second Edition, by Louis Bloomfield.

Course Content:

Fundametal concepts and laws of physics with an emphasis on understanding everyday phenomena.
Roughly equal emphasis is given to basic concepts(gravitation,mechanics, sound, electricity and
magnetism,light, modern physics) and explanations of how things work.
Designed to improve analytical reasoning,communication, and social skills.

Format of lectures:
                       Part I -- Traditional lecture/peer instruction-- The instructor will lead the class in a
                                        discussion of the Homework. This may involve asking
                                        students to write responses to questions and discuss them with their friends.
                                        Demonstrations will be given when it is helpful.

                       Part II -   Group discussions: Students will discuss a few selected homework problems
 

Graded Material

Homework (25%)
                     Homework is collected at the beginning of each lecture.
                     It will deal both with material that has already been discussed in
                     lecture and material that will be discussed in lecure that day.
                     Material that has not already been discussed in lecture will be graded on
                     the basis of effort alone. .

Final Exam (30%)

Make-up: You may make up any of the work above with a Dean's Excuse(not for labs).
                 If you miss a lab, your final exam grade will  be substituted for the lab grade.
 

Field Trips:

              Flight lesson:  You will have the opportunity to take one flight lesson at the Aviation Airport.
                                    To participate you must sign the waiver.

              N.C. State fair:  You will have the option of doing some experiments at the N.C. State Fair.
                                       To participate, you must sign the waiver.
