The Physics Department is always looking for excellent graduate students with a passion to do physics. Our admissions process is very competitive. We usually admit about 50 students from roughly 250 applicants from all over the world each year. The department faculty have many different research interests. More information is available through the graduate school shopper website designed for prospective graduate students by the American Institute of Physics. Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to learn about departmental research so that they can explain in their application why they are excited to come to Duke for graduate studies.

Admissions decisions are made by the Graduate Admissions Committee (GAC) after reviewing the entire application package which includes:

  1. Curriculum Vitae
  2. Academic performance (official transcript)
  3. Research experience
  4. Three (or more) letters of recommendation
  5. Statement of purpose (describing research interests)
  6. General GRE scores
  7. Physics GRE score

All the above are usually required for the application to be complete. In exceptional circumstances some of these requirements may be waived. Please contact the Director of Graduate Studies for any further information.

Applications must be submitted online through the graduate school web site before the physics department deadline which is December 31 of each year for next years Fall admission. While all applications received before the deadline will be reviewed completely by the Graduate Admissions Committee, applications received before December 15 may receive further scrutiny by other departmental faculty members. Hence it is advantageous to submit applications early.
