The expert on convection through porous media is Mark Steen. I mainly dressed up the images so that some data would be easier to interpret. These images are taken from Jason Fiering's master's thesis.

The original image in black and white. The bands show different directions of convection; specifically, the dark bands are downflows and the bright bands are upflows.
A 3-dimensional transform of the same image, with height representing intensity. Here, blue represents the dark regions and red represents the bright (upflow) regions.
